What data can be hidden in a photo?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) can embed technical details such as capture date and time, camera model and settings, and GPS coordinates when location was enabled. Other blocks, including IPTC and XMP, may carry descriptive or copyright information.
This data is invisible to the naked eye but readable by anyone with an image analysis tool, which can reveal where and when a photo was taken without you intending it.
Why remove EXIF before sharing
A photo taken at home with intact GPS coordinates can reveal where it was captured to anyone who obtains the file. France's data protection authority also notes that shared photos may contain location, capture time, and device information.
Removing metadata does not hide details visible in the pixels. Check faces, addresses, screens, license plates, and photographed documents before sending the picture.
